EU rate data is based on the European Commission / Your Europe VAT rates table, last checked by the EU on 13 July 2026. UK standard, reduced and zero rates are based on HMRC guidance. Always verify the current rate with the competent tax authority.
How VAT rates work
The standard VAT rate is the main rate applied to most taxable goods and services. Within the EU, each Member State sets its rates within the framework of the VAT Directive. The standard rate cannot be lower than 15%, while qualifying supplies may use reduced or special rates.
Why the rate for a transaction may differ
A country’s headline standard rate does not mean every sale is taxed at that percentage. Food, books, medicines, passenger transport, accommodation and other categories can have different treatment. Some territories also have regional rules. Use the country pages for quick calculations, but use official tax guidance to decide which rate legally applies.
